DAILY EDITION 500 POLE OPERATIONS IN THE PROVINCE THIS BRANCH OF FOREST INDUSTRIES INCREASES OUTPUT SIXFOLD IN SEVEN YEARS Operations Greatly Assist Settler Sub-Contractors In Clearing Their Land The British Columbia pole business is rapidly developing Into great importance. In the Vancouver forestry district alone there are over 200. operators employing 850 ml-n and considerable equipment in gelling out red cedar poles and in the whole province it is estimated that not less than 500 concerns, largq and small, em ploy over 2,000 men in this class or work. In the year 1923, over IG.000,000 feet of poles were produced in British Columbia of nil estimated value of $1,000,000 F.O.B. rail. This is no less than six times the quantity that was taken out of the B.C. woods in 1910. Settler Sub-Contractors I'ple cutting is largely done by selller sub-contractors who derive great benefit from this occupation, the revenue they receive greatly assisting them in clearing their properly of timber that would .otherwise be wasted, thus furnishing another example of the ubiquity of the B.C. forest industries. There is no more suitable wood for telegraph and telephone poles than BjC. red cedar and buyers all over the world are well awaro of this fact. British Columbia possesses threefifths of the world's supply of red cedar and given fair conditions its pole Industry has a great future ahead.
