DAILY EDITION. Monday, Feb. 7, 1927 TORONTO GLOBE WRITES OF P.G.E. That the latent resources of a country however great they may be, do not justify it in recklessly mortgaging the future is a lesson which the Province of British Columbia has been learning for the past ten years, writes the Toronto Globe editorially under the title of "A Boom Aftermath." During the earfy years of the century that great member of Confederation obtained a glimpse of the vast wealth, embedded in her soil -and she went mad over the possibilities in store for her. Her people began to speculate feverishly on the strength of her undeveloped riches. The pace in wild and adventurous enterprise was set by the Government of Sir Richard Mc-Bride. No project was too great to be considered impracticable, though the province had a limited population and a slender purse. Among the undertakings which received cabinet approval and support were railways; and the province was speedily encumbered with vast obligations which future settlers were expected to assume and assist in aeiraying. xne war stopped me immigration which was expenditure of millions the success of the enterprise from a financial EVERLASTING WHISPER ' IS TYPICAL MIX YARN : rirtiirr l ni-tlmtlv Men (Irartr In IHrwtlon Mlillrlrtlne. ami l'l graphy Mr Suirr "The Everlasting Whisper." coming to 'the Westholme Theatre tonight and to morrow, is a typical Tom Mix yarn and one that will make his huge following whoop in admiration or their hero and -the . never-to-be-forgotten horse Tony. Premier John Oliver on a recent date told the Legislature at Victoria all about his efforts to get rid of the incubus which was sapping the monetary strength pf the province, admitted with grief his utter failure, and after frankly placing the situation before the members of the House sank exhausted in his seat. ' ALL EFFORTS HAVE FAILED. He told the Legislature that he had tried to get the C.P.R. and the C.N.R. to take over the railway on almost any terms and both had refused. President Thornton has assured him, he said, 'with great candor, that if he had the P.G.E. he would not know what to do with it An effort to interest the Premier of Alberta in the line as a possible outlet, after its completion and extension tp the Peace River, had been without results. The Dominion Government was equally unconcerned with what was to become-af the line or with British Columbia's blood-sweating over it. In fact, he had found not only no assistance, but no sympathy, from governments or corporations. But Premier Oliver has yet hopes, faint though they be, that he will ifind a purchaser for the road who will undertake to complete it, and he has reached such a state of mind that he is prepared to sell to any responsible persons, Canadian or American. In the meantime British Columbia Js paying annually in interest charges on F.ll.E, bonds and loans morje than $2,000,000, and Is making good an annual deficit, which last year amounted to $274,971. That this marked a substantial reduction from 1022, when the deficit reached its peak of $487,383, is due to the careful policy of the manager, T. G. Kilpatrick. OUTLOOK FOR ROAD IS DARK. The outlook for the P.G.E. Is dark. Its future in competition with the Canadian National, even if it were pushed northward Into the Peace River country, is doubtful. Its prospects financially in serving the great fertile district through which it runs are not bright, owing to the sparse population and theslow progress of settlement. The dtuation is certainly a most unhappy one. "It Is," as Premier Oliver himself said, "more serious today than it has been from the time of the inception of the undertaking."
