BIG DRIVE FOR ATHLETIC CLUB Tuesday Next Set as Day Going out After Funds for Prince Rupert Amateur Athletic Assoo’n. for A drive for funds in connection with the newly formed Prince Ru- pert Amateur Athletic Association was arranged for at the meeting last night. It will take place on Tuesday of next week and all workers and others interested in forwarding the aims of the acco- ciation are asked to meet on Monday evening at 8 in the Board of Trade rooms in order to or- ganize the campaign. The drive is not so much for members as for subscriptions to- waris the building and equipment for which approximately %2,000 is needed. A rough estimate submitted by Mitchell & Currie at a meeting held last night in the Board of Trade rooms showed that nearly £1,100 would be required to fit up a proper permanent dressing room with stair leading to the main exhibition building and with two showers and hot water heat- ing apparatus. The amount of apparatus se- cured wil] depend largely upon the funds collected, but the whole expenditure in connection with the building and equipment should not be less than $2,000 in order to «ive the new association a good start. It is the intention to canvass every person in the city that can be reached and to try to secure the full amount needed so that vaiigapss Wednesday, Oct, 22, 1919. eee ‘over the association to handicap 1 its work, Plans are to be prepared of the new improvements and every- thing will be neady to go right ahead just as soon as the money tis forthcoming. JUNEAU HAS BLIND PIGS’ So Says Grand Jury Which Recommends That They Be Suppressed. Juneau, Oct. 22.—The Grand Jury which has just been dis- charged in its report says as fol- lows: “Our investigations justify the belief that many of the so-called ‘soft drink’ resorts now being operated in the city of Juneau ‘are what are known as ‘blind pigs; that intoxicatirg liquors are being or have been sold in them to the detriment and injury of the city and community. “We further find that, with but few exceptions, these ‘blind pigs are owned and operated by fer- eigners who are not in sympathy with our laws and institutions; that they are here and engagiy: in unlawful business for the sole purpose of illicit gain; that may of them are on record as haviis violated the laws of our country, having been previously convict.d of such violation. “We, therefore, recommend that in future, prison tenms be included in the punishment meted put to these offenders of our laws for the reason that fines are not adequate to the magnitude of tie majority of the offenses, their there may be no debt hanging illicit business having been «f i the auch financial profit that even the) maximum fine is of small conse quence to them. : “We further recommend that | immigration authorities urged to investigate existing con- ditions with the view of de to the various countries from whenee they came the many alicns who are defying the laws of our country by engaging in illegal and unlawful pursuits.” There is a lettean for Mr. Arthur Evans at.the offte of the Free/" Miners’ League.
