Magazine" m London, England, says the depression has lasted so long "because it is so well advertised. Newspapers," he says, "have given it about $50,000,000 worth of space for nothing. Parsons, bishops and archbishops have advertised it. Politicians have advertised it Worst of all," he continues, "even travelling salesmen, who ought to know better, have advertised it, nnd carried the bad news f ror customer to customer." Then he issues this warning: "Everyone who talks depression and predicts disaster is ad vertising this depression. The continuance of the depres won proves the power of advertising. It keeps the fear of bad trade in men's minds. It prevents them from buyinjr what they ought to buy." We quit agree with Mr. Casson that the trouble is accentuated by the advertising it gets, just as inflation advertised in a similar manner. It is the subject that if nearesTmost people's minds for it affects them all the time, at every meal thev eat and everv time thov dpnv themselves any of the luxuries of life. It is worldwide and each nation advertises it to the others. The result i tw the depression is as much exaggerated as was the inflation which nreceded it. To urge optimism then was just as bad as would be today an urge to greater depression. It if quite impossible for newspapers to refuse to see that which affects the lives of its readers more than anything else in the world. Today we are adjusting ourselves to the new condition which has arrived and we are beginning to see the silver lining to the dark cloud. Pretty soon we shall be looking back to the year 1932 as the time when things began to improve and many will realize that the depression of that time was the best thing that ever happened to them for it had a chastening effect which could be brought to them in no other way. Many people are opposed to the policies of Premier Bennett but all will hope that he may succeed in conjunction with the other leaders in doing something for Canada which will be of material benefit. Just now wise leadership is needed and co-operation to every possible extent in bringing about a better condition. CHILDREN OFF STREETS It is not good for children to be running the streets late at night The police are being asked to enforce the curfew law requiring the young folks to be off the streets by 10 o'clock and they intimate that drastic action may be necessary. The parents are the real offenders and presumably they will be the ones who will be punished if they do not take better care of their offspring. Children should be in bed by 10 o'clock ordinarily and many parents require that they retire much earlier than that. They need sleep in order to properly develop. If the u icui; ti.-ir uuiy uj uwir ennui en it is men the duty of public officials to compel them to do it. Children of today will be the citizens of tomorrcnv and the whole community is interested in peeing that they are brought up to be useful men and women with the right outlook on life.
