PULLEN - - - Managing-Editor ELECTION ON JUNE 1 The election of a new provincial legislature is to take place June 1. The provincial government will he on trial. If the people of the province approve of the conduct of affairs since the Pattullo government took office from the Tolmie administration the natural thing will be to return them for another term. If they disapprove they will be defeated and replaced by some other government. It is to be assumed that there will be in the field three or four parties. There will be party that dissolved at the stration, some running as Other names. Only one professed Conservative was elected. Under the reorganization of Dr. Frank Patterson the Conservatives wiU again have candidates in the field and the probability is they may elect a few members. The C. C. P. group has been rather badly split since the last general election. The leader, Rev. Robert Connell, and several of his followers left the party because they felt it was bcoming communistic. They have formed a new party and will have candidates in the field in some constituencies. The C. C. F. party still continues as a party, but there is more or less change in its personnel going on ' all the time. However, the members continue active and keen and are likely to put up a good fight for a place in the legislature, even though it scarcely can expect to command anything approaching a majority there. It seems rather as if it might be a contest between Conservatives and C. Ci F. for second place. the traditional Conservative close of the Tolmie admini unionists and others under on health insnrancp On that POLICY OF THE LIBERALS We have not yet before US (the full text of the manifesto issued by the Pattullo government in re yard to nolicv px- eept insofar as its stand yoes It is proposed to take a plebiscite of the electors and, ifi they approvee, there will be a health insurance law passed, I although not the same law that was proposed recently. Since the present government took charge, the finances of the province have been rehabilitated and industry hasi revived, until today it is said that British Columbia 'leads! the rest of Canada in its recovery from the depression.! Pressure has been brought to bear upon Ottawa with the1 result that some help has been received, not only in thej matter of loans but also in highway construction, build-' ing of mining roads and also in contributions to general1 revenue of the province. Further efforts will be made) through the commission which is to be appointed, to see' that British Columbia gets a fair deal in the Canadian ! federation. Few, if any, provincial governments have! made such progress in so short a time as the one now in' power. For that reason alone it seems hardly likely there1 will be any change in the general set-up a- a result of this election. CLEAN UP FOR TOURISTS No plans have been made this year so far to prepare for the advent of tourists by cleaning ami painting up and HenaraUy improving the appearance of the city. Possibly before the spring is over such a campaign may be started but at any rate in order to keep our own self-respect it would be a good thing to clean and paint up as soon as possible.
