Harold Hicks, governor of District 101, Rotary International, at a dinner at' tended by 70 In the Commodore last night. The dinner was preceded by a reception and fol lowed by a dance In the Old Landmark. Mr. Hicks, wrho was also com pleting a tour of Rotary Clubs in Alaska, arrived on the Prince Rupert from Ketchikan at 7 o'clock sailing later for Vancouver. He was met by James H. Thompson, president of the local club. Speaking at the dinner, Mr. Hicks emphasized the appeal to personal service which Rotary Ideals offer. Rotary, he said, combines the element of vision with t.hnt. nf wnrlr fnr thp wnrlrl's benefit. I "A vision without a task is a dream," he declared. "A tasU without vision Is drudgery. But a vision with a task Is the hope of the world. There was a vision of finer communities, attuned to finerand nobler ideals and pur poses through the extension of Rotary." Rotary, Governor Hicks said, has become largely a small town movement. It exerts its greatest influence In the smaller com munities and in many of them. If the Rotary Club failed, there would not be any organization left to render service. "When we think of Rotary as a means of giving something to the world. 4then we have no righ' to withold It from any community," he asserted. An agriculturalist himself, Mr Hicks made a plea for more understanding rural-urban relations and greater understanding between the farmer and the city dweller. Rotary's growth.is attested to by the fact that last year 230 new clubs were formed throughout the world and th.-: ttiere are 5,777 clubs embracing 275,000 members active at the present time. Prior to the dinner, Mr. Hicks was Introduced to local Rotarians and their guests at a reception held in t he Old Landmark. Following the dinner the party returned to the Old Landmark where dancing was enjoyed. Refreshments were served at THIS AND THAT fill Tl. Cmrt Malllirw AJiim Smirt, Inf. I IT "It needs something." LETTERBOX Editor, Dally News, With all due respect towards F. B. Gambling attitude regard ing to saving of money, I dls-diree, however, regarding his attitude towards women in In dustry. It would be well If Mr. Gam-blln would remember that people are still being born, not made in factories. Canada is a rich country, still undeveloped, and It would ba far better If we encouraged people to work, rather than trying to discourage them. There is plenty of work to be done and plenty of people and money to do it and if we cannot get it done under the capitalist system, without slitting the other fellow's throat, then let's have a change.
