In In electricity pipptricitv oi us memoers 10 any e.iem, it is supo-psted that here should be the source of quite a few recruits for the Prince Rupert Regiment which is now out for new members. Some had .previously pleaded that their obligations to the A.R.P. precluded them joining up with the reserve. It would appear that plea at least is no longer valid. As a matter of fact, for the most of local men there is a good deal more spare time now than there was a year or so ago. Those'who are actively in-teiestinj? themselves in seeing that the local Reserve Army is brought up to a fitting measure of strength feel that many men are almost in duty bound to give some of this time to the Armv so that the organization shall be kept -strong and intact until such time as many rescuers .have been .killed tfor want of knowledge of how to effect a rescue. Sympathizers are not lacking when an accident occurs or when someone is taken ill in the street but for the most part they cannot help by reason pf their ignorance of first aid. There is no need for that ignorance in Prince Rupert. Condition of Cemetery . . . of public jvater supplies, may I take this opportunity for an. -ex pression of rqy opinion. Sterilization of water by chlor-amination positvely causes no harm to the human organism and the Introduction of approximately one quarter of one ,part of. chlorine and ammonia to. one million parts of water should not give the public cause for concern .and certainly does not warrant apprehension on the part of anyone. With the introduction of chlorine and ammonia In these amounts the individual citizen is not being poisoned, softness of water has not been affected and water looks, tastes and smells as it always did. ; For our own information yes- and myself conducted an experiment taking samples of untreat- . .. . .,ed and treated (chlorinated) Visitors 10 JaiEView meujr.v unwater. We submitted these to. late have been mentioning the unkept number of persons. The results supply Is safe. iSuch opinions, however, may be based on Jim-'ted experience and as such can be misleading. The standards for iJYIetlakatla water supplies for the country as pi . (Tniinril ence cf public health authoriUes t gained over a very wide field. This experience has demonstrated repeatedly that not all but certainly too many substandard water supplies sooner or later are responsible for outbreaks of water-borne, disease. Of such sub-standard supplies, it is, the Introduction of chlorin- atlon, Prince Rupert .water was grossly contaminated with bac teria of a faecal origin. There was certainly no lack of evidence ot the need of chloraminatlon of the city water supply. t ,It is no doubt true that many people ln Prince .Rupert are of the opinion that it is unnecessary to chlorinate the local water supply. It should be borne n mind however, that such an opinion Is common in every com munlty until an outbreak of water-borne disease occurs and experience indicates that out breaks will occur in various com munltles In Cajiada unless all sub-standard water supplies are effectively safeguarded. If, and where these outbreaks occur, it Is possible that young men and women from this community, serving in the armed forces may be affected under such unfortun ate circumstances It may be that even, those persons who might be inclined to raise their voices against chlorlnatlon here would be very harsh in their Judgment pf. the authorities for their fail ure to.
